About Dan Horkey
Dan Horkey is all too familiar with the difficulties of losing a limb. He lost the lower half of his leg in a motorcycle accident and has struggled since then with the emotional and physical challenges of being an amputee.

Dan Horkey

About four years ago, he came up with idea of tattooing his prosthesis with artwork that reflects his personality. “The moment I put art on my socket, I stood tall and my self-esteem was higher,” Horkey says. “I wear my prosthesis with pride.” The positive response of others inspired him to create a business that would help those who had lost limbs – recover some of the self-confidence they had lost with their injuries.

Twenty years into wearing a prosthetic, Dan Horkey, a trained Orthotic and Prosthetic Technician, created his own socket and applied his first tattoo, thereby initiating the tattooed prosthetic concept.

Global Tattoo Orthotic Prosthetic Innovations, LLC (GTOPI) founder Dan Horkey invented several innovative methods for applying artwork to braces and prosthetics, empowering fellow amputees to express their individualistic ideas through custom orthotic tattoo. Horkey’s process vastly expands the options beyond the laminated fabric choices currently available.

“I really want to help fellow entities open up and not be ashamed or hide their prosthetics,” he said. “I want to help amputees be themselves again. I think that having a prosthetic they are proud of, can really help them feel better sooner.”

“I help other amputees and those who wear orthotics regain their self-esteem, image and pride while helping them feel whole again”
