Dear Supporters,

We are pleased to announce that our very own co-founder, Deborah Semer, was nominated and won a finalist spot in the KOMO Brotherton Community Champion Awards last fall. In return, an 8 minute film about Deborah Semer & Operation Ward 57 was created. The top three champions will have their film screened at the Seattle International Film Festival on May 26, and the one with the most votes in an online competition wins $5,000 for their charity.

While all of the candidates competing in this competition are more than worthy of winning, we need your vote! Voting is done online and can be done every day until May 22nd.

About the Filmmaker

By happy coincidence, Rick Walters was the perfect filmmaker to tell Deborah’s story. Walters is not only a veteran of stage and screen, but also a veteran of war with 10+ years in the Army and injuries sustained in combat. He serves full time as an Operations Sergeant at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.  “I really had no idea what I was getting myself into when I volunteered for this. I am primarily an actor and producer and although I have a broad knowledge of film making, I certainly was not prepared for the challenges and the rewards that I got from working on this project.  Technical aspects aside, I had an amazing time learning about this woman’s story. Flying to Washington DC with one days notice to follow around a complete stranger was fun too!”
