Race for a Soldier 2011 Event – Wrap Up

Oct 16, 2011

On October 16th, 2011, Operation Ward 57 participated in the Race for a Soldier event held in Gig Harbor, WA.

Operation Ward 57, in conjunction with Seattle Marathon Association, had an information booth set up allowing us to raise awareness for wounded soldiers and their families while being able to provide support for those participating in the morning prayer and race event. We also were able to discuss the upcoming “Iraq Remembrance Run 2011” event coming up on November 26th, 2011.

The race, in part, is a tribute race to the son of Leslie Mayne as well as raising awareness and benefiting servicemen men and women suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injuries. The race started with a prayer breakfast on Friday, October 14th and culminated with a half-marathon on Sunday, October 16th. More than 1,100 individuals participated in the run.

Leslie’s brother, ESPN’s Kenny Mayne, emceed the Race for a Soldier event. Leslie walked Mile 9 of the race alone, in memory of Kyle, who wore #9 when he played football.
